Perhaps the craziest moment of Hinterland’s journey occurred in March 2021 when a fan called in to his favourite radio show at 3am and requested their single “Loud”. Despite never having heard of the band, the hosts obliged and quickly became fans themselves – encouraging their listeners to jump onto socials and streaming and support this unknown Aussie group. Overnight, Hinterland’s then 5 month old EP skyrocketed to the top of the album charts, outselling Billie Eillish, Keith Urban and Taylor Swift and their online following more than doubled. To thank this fan, the band sent him an autographed megaphone, the very same that was used in the “Loud” music video. That’s how it’s come to be, for Hinterland, as an independent group without industry backing: you’ve never heard of them…until you HEAR them…then you can’t understand how you’d never heard of them before.
